What I Meant to Do

 

To my girl friends,
who have held me and loved me at my most unlovable,
some of whom are mothers themselves,
the kind of mothers I pray to God I might become someday;
to my girl friends who aren’t mothers,
but are sisters of my heart,
who keep me close
while my own sister is so far away.

To my education professors, to my pastor’s wife,
to the women in my church who take my breath away
with their faith and kindness;
to The Bloggess, to my dance teacher;
to all of the women who taught me that grace is better than anger
(even if I’m still Bad at That),
that it is Okay to be smart and funny and…

that God doesn’t just love women who are all doilies-and-teacups;
that it is Okay that I am not my mother’s Perfect Daughter.

Poor kid got her lady parts snipped on Tuesday.
The Boyo and I may have been laughing a great deal at her expense since then.

She can’t figure out how to keep her head up when she’s navigating stairs,
so she keeps running into them like a confused Roomba;
when we take her outside in the rain, it fills the cone like a traveling aquarium–
the more disconcerted she gets,
the harder we laugh.

I tried to tell Nami that Lady Gaga wishes she had thought to wear a plastic cone
to the Grammys instead of that tired ol’ egg trope,
but I don’t think she cared.

Not even when I offered to Bedazzle it.

 
 
I am an AWESOME dog owner, y’all.

Beautiful, True, Hard:

An ode to motherhood,
of sorts.

I like what she said about being willing to fight Satan and ten men,
and having that never asked of you–
of having to fight the tiny, shitty, Sisyphean battles instead.

Which are so much harder.

Whenever I read posts like these,
I just want to reach through the interwebs and give the authors a huge hug,
and probably a very large margarita.
